Short ram sucks in hot engine bay temps. cold air sucks in true cold air from under your bumper.

The colder the air, the more dense, the more power...

There are inherent pros and cons of both intake systems, but the main difference between a short ram intake and a cold air intake is where the intake gets its air from. A short ram intake sits and the engine bay where the air temps are warmer due to the heat the engine produces while a cold air intake sits away from the engine bay, usually in the front fender where it can suck in cooler air from the outside. Sucking in cool air is important because cool air is denser than warm air, which means cool air molecules are closer together, so more air can fit into a given amount of space. An engine creates power by mixing and compressing air and fuel. The more air you can fit into a cylinder at one time, the bigger explosion you can create which in turn creates more horsepower. This is why a CAI is a wiser choice for making power.

These guys pretty much said it all :)

Remeber though, that you want to use a Bypass Valve on your CAI. Cause in the event you suck up water you dont want to Hydrolock the Motor.

in addition to that....

Cold Air Intake (CAI) Vs Ram Air Intake (RAI)

Here is a quick Pros & Cons list to help you decide which is better for your babies.

Ram Air Intake: Also known as a Short Ram Intake. This type of intake uses the straightest possible tubing with a large filter with heat shield to get the maximum air flow. Does not go into the fenderwell.

Pros: Pulls in more air, usually cheaper due to less piping.
Cons: Air pulled in is warm from the engine compartment.

Cold Air Intake: Uses a curved pipe to go in and sometimes down the inside of the fender to pull in air that is not heated by the engine. Uses a smaller filter than a Ram Air Intake and will not pull in the same volume of air as the Ram Air Intake.

Pros: Pulls in cold air for better combustion.
Cons: Pulls in less air, usually more expensive.
