Default Heel toe

In doing some research for my dream rear wheel drive jdm car, I've seen a lot of discussion about heel toe driving. I have driven standards but not a sports car (civic does not count for me). What does this really mean?

Heel-and-toe is a driving technique used in performance driving, although a lot of people (including me) use it on the road in everyday conditions in the interest of effectiveness.

It basically operating the throttle and brake pedals simultaneously with the right foot, while using the clutch with the left foot. It is used when braking and downshifting are needed at the same time (prior to entering a turn). It allows the driver to "blip" the throttle to raise the RPMs to smoothly engage the lower gear while braking.

STEP-BY-STEP:

When coming up to the corner accelerate on the straight

Start braking in a straight line

Press the clutch while braking and select your exit gear

Using your HEEL tap or blip the gas pedal to raise the RPMs

Release the brake and clutch, accelerate through the exit

Accelrate harder through the exit

Done! Heel-Toe shifting!

BTW - you don't have to have a sports car or a RWD car to use this technique. All you need is a manual (stick shift) car and an empty road with nice turns

When braking hard for a corner, the idea is to downshift as quickly as possible to the appropriate gear for that corner without taking one's foot off the brake. This is done by braking, clutching, and matching revs to the desired gear one wishes to downshift to at the same time. The front of your right foot or, "toe" is used for braking, while your heel of your right foot is used to blip the throttle in accordance with downshifting and clutching. Ferrari's are so famous for this because to heel and toe requires a lot of engine blipping and revving etc which creates quite the sound when done correctly. F1 cars and modern Ferrari's of course do not need this due to F1 gearboxes essentially doing this all for you

I made a vid for a Time Attack thread a few years ago, I'll see if I can dig it up.
