all I know is it doesn't always work. If you landlord says rent to own and before the "rent to own" kicks in he can decided to sell the place and you are out that money. Happened to the people who lived next door.

the rent to own is the condition that the item will be owned by the renter if the term of rent is finished, or that the lease can be converted to a sale for a nominal fee at that time so you could buy out the remaining balance. it's somehow connected to lease. let's say you are leasing a car for this period of years and the term is done, then you could pay out the remaining balance in order to own buy you
