Default Engine is making a knocking noise

Me and my cousin decided to do some maintenance on his Ford Focus 2002 with a 4-cylinder engine. We changed the spark plugs and the air filter. We also did an oil change but we were in such a hurry that were trying to do multiple things at once. I drained the oil and change the oil filter then I proceeded to charge the ac on the car. In order to charge the ac on my cousin's car we had to to turn it on. the car idled for about 15-18 minutes (the time it took us to charge the ac) before we realized that I had forgotten to put the oil back in.

I rushed to turn the car off and we can now hear a knocking noise in the engine. We are not sure if this was there before we did the oil change but its there now. our biggest concern is that there might be a rod issue now or some issue with the head. Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks

OOH OHH!!! You might want to drain the oil through a clean cloth and see if you see any copper or aluminum pieces floating in it that could be part of the rod or maybe main bearings.

The head maybe making noise because of lack of oil to the cam and the lifters may have collapsed. It can be very difficult to tell where the noise is coming from a lot of times.
Try using a long screwdriver and hold one end to your ear and the other to several places on the block and head and see where you hear the most noise this should help pin it down.

Good luck I hope it's something easily fixed.
